John and Carol Hay’s Steel House (now demolished)

Architect Caswell Cook designed the Steel House, built out of thin sheets of Cor-10
steel tack-welded onto a huge skeleton of steel pipes. The idea was that the sheet would
rust to a russet brown on the surfaces and then not rust further.
Unfortunately, that did not turn out to be what happened.
The interior walls were sprayed with foam, painted with fire resistant paint.
The house was entirely built by amateurs led by John Hay who learned welding for the job.
AN EXTRAORDINARY ACCOMPLISHMENT!
